RAPITYPES - Complete design and manufacturing assistance from a single source

Stereolithography is the layer build process by which a 3D computer generated model is physically created through a succession of cross sectional slices. Currently there are 3 methods of building a layered model – SLA in which the layers are formed within a laser light cured epoxy resin, SLS in which the layers are laser light sintered from a thermoplastic polymer powder and FDM in which the layers are laid down in the form of a molten polymer. Each process has key advantages and is selected on this basis. Building in 0.05 - 0.1mm layers and working 24 hrs a day a rigid prototype model can often be generated over night. These models can offer the designer a quick fit/function model for verification of the design, and can be a vital communication aid for marketing personnel and tool makers, or they can form the basis of a downstream tooling activity or test process. Rapitypes® offers SLA, SLS and FDM models. From receipt of good STL CAD files, RP models can be completed in 2-5 days, depending on size, complexity and capacity, and are supplied with full instructions on care and handling. SLS models utilise a power binder with thermoplastic additives that range from polystyrene and reinforced polystyrene, to Nylon and GR Nylon (PA2200). The binder is heat fused by the laser in 0.15mm layers and the resultant parts are strong yet semi-flexible with high temperature resistance (up to 120°C). The process lends itself to prototype applications where high deflection and rigorous test analysis is required in, for example, motor housings, fans, moving parts etc.
