Conformal Coating FAQ What is Conformal Coating? Conformal coating is a protective, dielectric coating designed to conform to the surface of an assembled printed circuit board or PWA. Commonly used conformal coatings include silicone, acrylic, urethane, and epoxy. We apply all these coatings regularly, except epoxy, which is rarely specified due to its permanence. (A fifth type of coating, parylene, is not included in this discussion. It is a vacuum-deposited dimer used primarily in space and military operations. Its expense generally precludes its use in commercial applications.) Back to Top Why use conformal coating? * Coating offers protection of circuitry from moisture, fungus, dust and corrosion caused by extreme environments. * Coating prevents damage from board handling during construction, installation and use, and reduces mechanical stress on components and protects from thermal shock. * Coating resists abrasion in service. * Coating enhances performance and allows greater component density due to increased dielectric strength between conductors.
