Curtiss-Wright Bags Boeing Contract To Set Up Laser Peen Forming Production Cell - Update (RTTNews) - Monday, Curtiss-Wright Corp. (CW), a motion control and flow control products company, revealed bagging a Boeing contract to establish a laser peen forming production cell for the plane maker. Curtiss-Wright said the contract was awarded to its Metal Treatment segment and will carry out the contract inside Boeing's Frederickson, Washington facility. The Roseland, New Jersey based Curtiss-Wright indicated the laser peening cell is expected to be in production during the second quarter of 2008. The cell will primarily be utilized for shaping the complex curvatures of some of the wing sections of the new Boeing 747-8. Financial details of the contract were not revealed. Martin Benante, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Curtiss-Wright, said, "We are very pleased to be providing Boeing with our state-of-the-art laser peen technology for their most advanced aircraft design. This award is a significant milestone in bringing our proprietary laser peening technology to the market. A number of industry leaders, such as Rolls Royce and Siemens have also recognized the benefits of this process and we see a strong outlook for additional production orders." Curtiss-Wright's laser peening technology is based on a Neodymium glass laser technology, originally developed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The laser peening technology is indicated to have the ability to provide deep compressive stresses on the surface of metal parts that can be used to precisely form metal panels into their desired shape.
